Why JEXA needs your support

Because Tokyo Big Sight will be used for the media center for the 20 months between 2019 and 2020 for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games (hereafter, “Tokyo Olympics”), there is threat that many exhibition will be canceled or reduced. (For details, refer to JEXA Official Statement – The latest edition (Vol. 4. ))

Meanwhile, the 2020 Games plan also intends to use Makuhari Messe in Chiba City as a competition venue.
If the current plan becomes realized, even limited to 5 months (the period that the damage is most serious), it is estimated that 37,000 companies of the current 41,000 companies which have been exhibiting every year (most of them are SME’s) can’t exhibit, and they will lose JPY 1.0125 trillion in sales. Also 1,000 exhibition services companies currently providing booth construction, electricity, security, printing, etc. will lose an estimated JPY 113 billion in revenue because their job will be reduced to 1/4.

To solve this issue, Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) has made several revised plans (such as building 23,000 sqm new temporary exhibition center) since last year to decrease the damage, and the exhibition industry deeply appreciated those efforts; however, because the new temporary exhibition center has only 1/4 of scale of Tokyo Big Sight, there is still strong probability that will cause huge economic damage.

As a result, we have received around 80,000 petitions from all across the world requesting full solutions, and we have submitted them to Ms. Koike, Tokyo Governor on Jan. 20th, 2017. The number of petition continues to increase, and now it reaches over 147,000. This is a fact that “The issue isn’t solved fundamentally, and more people feel the issue more seriously as the Olympic is approaching”.

JEXA hopes for a successful Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. At the same time, we are acutely concerned about the current plan to utilize Tokyo Big Sight as the media center for Tokyo Olympics, as the issue could cause serious effect on not only the tradeshow industry but the citizens of Tokyo and Japan. JEXA is determined to keep making petitions to related governments, entities and organizations to insist that “all tradeshows shall be held even in 2020 at the same size and the same number of times as in the past”.

JEXA is going to keep collecting petitions to resolve the current issue.
Your single petition could make a difference|please spare a moment to sign your name on the Petition (Downloadable Format and Online Petition).
If you have already signed before, kindly ask your friends or relatives for petition.
JEXA would appreciate your support and cooperation with us on this issue.

We sincerely look forward to your continuous support.
