Because Tokyo Big Sight will be used for the media center for the 20 months between 2019 and 2020 for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games (hereafter, “Tokyo Olympics”), there is threat that many exhibition will be canceled or reduced. (For details, refer to “Unavailable Period of Tokyo Big Sight” within JEXA Official Statement Vol. 3.)
Meanwhile, the 2020 Games plan also intends to use Makuhari Messe in Chiba City as a competition venue.
If the current plan becomes realized, even if limited to 7 months in 2020, it is estimated that 38,000 companies of the current 50,000 companies which have been exhibiting every year (most of them are SME’s) can’t exhibit, and they will lose JPY 1.2 trillion in sales. Also 1,000 exhibition services companies currently providing booth construction, electricity, security, printing, etc. will lose an estimated JPY 133 billion in revenue because their job will be reduced to 1/4.
To solve this issue, Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) has made several revised plans (such as building 23,000 sqm new temporary exhibition center) since last year to decrease the damage, and the exhibition industry deeply appreciated those efforts; however, because the new temporary exhibition center has only 1/4 of scale of Tokyo Big @Sight, there is still strong probability that will cause huge economic damage.
As a result, we have received around 80,000 petitions from all across the world requesting full solutions, and we have submitted them to Ms. Koike, Tokyo Governor on Jan. 20th, 2017.
JEXA hopes for a successful Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. At the same time, we are acutely concerned about the current plan to utilize Tokyo Big Sight as the media center for Tokyo Olympics, as the issue could cause serious effect on not only the tradeshow industry but the citizens of Tokyo and Japan. JEXA is determined to keep making petitions to related governments, entities and organizations to insist that “all tradeshows shall be held even in the Olympic year at the same size and the same number of times as in the past”.
JEXA is going to keep collecting petitions to resolve the current issue.
