In October 2015, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) announced a plan to requisition most of the exhibition halls at Tokyo Big Sight* for 20 months (from April 2019 to November 2020) for the purpose of converting them into the international media center for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Meanwhile, the 2020 Games plan also intends to use Makuhari Messe in Chiba City as a competition venue. The period of time that use of Makuhari Messe would be disrupted remains to be determined, but indications are that it could be unavailable for exhibitions for up to six months.
If the Big Sight and Makuhari Messe plans are implemented, then nearly all exhibitions planned to be held in the Tokyo area during that time will have to be cancelled. Faced with these circumstances, JEXA issued an “official statement” in November 2015 calling on the TMG to ensure that all exhibitions can be held at Tokyo Big Sight as scheduled.
Responding to JEXA's request, the TMG in February 2016 unveiled a revised plan that shortens the amount of time Tokyo Big Sight would be unavailable and includes the construction of a temporary exhibition center to mitigate the lack of event space. JEXA appreciates the efforts of the TMG and all related entities involved in developing the revised plan.
However, the revised plan would still see Tokyo Big Sight closed for seven months (from April to November 2020) while it is being used as the international media center. As such, the exhibition industry as a whole, including exhibitors, visitors, services companies, etc., remains gravely concerned.
JEXA issued a second official statement in April 2016 and is now collecting petitions to demand that further action be taken to resolve the issue.
The purpose of the petitions is clear: “To ensure a successful 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games does not interfere with exhibitions at Tokyo Big Sight”. We would like to ask that everyone who has not yet submitted a petition to review the materials we have compiled here and add their name to those supporting our cause.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
